The captain of the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics team, Aly Raisman of Needham, Mass scored big today in the women’s gymnastics qualifying round placing second in rankings for the all around.
Raisman “dazzled” according to a news report from the Los Angeles Times. Raisman needed to score at least 15.200 on her final rotation and floor exercise to qualify.
The U.S. Women’s Gymnastic team captain used the Hebrew song "Hava Nagila" as the music for her floor performance. Reisman won a world championship floor exercise bronze medal last year.
Olympic upset for Jordan Weiber
Raisman's teammate Gabby Douglas of Virginia Beach, Virginia placed third. In an Olympic upset, Jordyn Wieber who was favored to win a Gold Medal in the event, did not even make the cut for the all around competition, ranking fourth behind her two teammates.
Weiber, the reigning world champion, was considered the rock of the team and was visibly disappointed by her showing for the all around.

How the Women's Gymnastics qualifying round works
Only two gymnasts per country are eligible for the all-around final and each event final. Though Wieber placed fourth overall in the all-around standings Sunday, she was only third on her own team and so was not eligible for the all-around final, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.
U.S. women gymnasts make U.S. Olympic Team Finals
The U.S. women’s team advanced to the team finals at the 2012 Olympic Games after “an impressive team effort at the North Greenwich Arena that put them at the top of the team rankings for the qualification round,” as reported on The USA Olympics website. Weiber will participate on that event as well as the individual floor exercise event.
Four of the U.S. women gymnasts also qualified the individual event finals for the London 2012 Olympics.
The USA posted a team total of 181.863, putting it ahead of Russia at 180.429 and China at 176.637, respectively. The rest of the team final field are Romania, Great Britain, Japan, Italy, and Canada. Scores from the qualifying round do not carry forward to the finals.

"I'm very pleased with how the competition went. We proved we are very well prepared. They hit all of their routines, which is what I expected. We did have some tiny mistakes here and there that we will correct for the team finals," said Women's National Team Coordinator Martha Karolyi as reported on the U.S. gymnastics website.
